Buick was initially an independent company founded David Dunbar Buick in Michigan, named the
Buick Motor Company. The time was 1903. In 1904, the company, already in financial difficulty, was taken over and
William C. Durant was brought in to manager it, and Buick quickly became the largest automaker in America. Taking advantage of this popularity, Durant acquired a dozen other companies, giving rise to the famous automotive giant,
General Motors. Shortly thereafter,
Chevrolet merged with
Buick and the other GM brands.
